How does God speak to us?

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” - Romans 10:17

People are quick to say things like:

“We think God is leading us there”

“God spoke to us and...”

“I feel confident that God is saying to me...”

And, if I’m being transparent, I pretty much always assume they are exaggerating the guidance they feel like they have gotten from God.

God speaking and directing people is a sticky thing. It is often misconstrued and misunderstood.

Personally, I think most people just make whatever decision they want and use their own comfort and common sense to gauge whether it was God’s will or not. Which is not a good way to determine that.

It leaves us to wonder if God actually speaks to us and if so, how?

The encouraging truth is that God really does speak to people in today’s age. Specifically, there are three primary ways He does:

1. God speaks to us through his Word. God is consistently whispering to us through the scriptures. He is belaboring his points through the Bible.

The Bible is God’s primary way of speaking to us in present day.

Wondering if you should share the Gospel with your friend? Matt. 28:18-19 would encourage you to do so.

Trying to decide if you should date that guy or gal who’s not a Christian? 2 Cor. 6:14 advises you to stray from that and to find someone who is on par with your spirituality.

Feeling like your mistakes and sins aren’t forgiven? 1 John 1:9 discusses that God is faithful and just to forgive your sins - regardless of severity.

God’s Word guides us.

2. God speaks to us through His Holy Spirit. 1 Cor. 2:12 details the fact that God has given believers the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is the third member of the trinity. HE (all caps because the Holy Spirit is a “He”, not an “it”) guides, convicts and strengthens us in our faith walk.

He is often responsible for the gut feelings of conviction and weariness that go along with making certain decisions. Through those things, the Holy Spirit can help bridge the gap of grey areas in the Bible.

Remember this though: the Holy Spirit will never lead you towards something that does not align with scripture. If you feel led to something contrary to the Bible, it ain’t the Spirit.

3. God speaks through His people who are filled with the Holy Spirit. Oftentimes God will use another strong Christian in our lives to get his message through to us.

We’ve all been in a situation where we were about to make an unwise decision and the wise counsel of a friend, family member or mentor kept us from doing so.

This is why God gives us community and calls us to be a part of a local body of believers (church).

Christianity can’t happen on an island. We need each other to help discern what God may be trying to convey to us.

All in all, God is speaking to all of us everyday. Perhaps not audibly like we might prefer. but still clearly nonetheless.

Cling close to His Word, His Spirit and His people. It is what will guide you in this life. They are your hearing aids for God’s voice.
